Elver Boyd Atwood, Jr. passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home in Viborg, South Dakota on Thursday, November 3, 2016, at the age of 84. On February 24, 1932, Elver was born to Hollis (Lickiss) and Elver Atwood in Sioux Falls, SD. Elver grew up in Sioux Falls and spent most of his life in Sioux Falls. On August 15, 1949, he was united in marriage to Donna Howen at Marshall, Minnesota. At the age of 16 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served at Bremerton, Washington. At the end of his service time he received an honorable discharge and the couple moved back to Sioux Falls. Elver drove truck for Ozgood delivering grain to farmers, worked at the Cottage Restaurant, Syrum Plant, Greenlys, Melmans, Sioux Valley Hospital, and John Morrell and Company. He retired from John Morrell with over 20 years service. Elver loved camping, fishing, going to rummage sales and square dancing. He also loved going to local high school sporting events, including, basketball, baseball volleyball and track. In their spare time Elver and Donna had several rental properties that they enjoyed renovating. Family and friends affectionately labeled some of Elvers handyman projects as being Elverized. He is survived by his sons, Rick Atwood, Hartford, SD; Mike (Brenda) Atwood, Sioux Falls, SD; his special friends, Donna and Ken Grover, Harlingen, TX; grandchildren, Tameria Atwood, Jennifer English, Jason Atwood, Sunny Karst, Travis Atwood and Angela Atwood; 12 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, Elver Atwood; mother, Hollis Douda; stepfather, Anthony Tony Douda; brothers, David Atwood and Lloyd Atwood; sister, Delilah Howen; daughter, Theresa Atwood. Elvers family thanks you for your presence today. Visitation will be 3-7 pm Monday at Chapel Hill Funeral Home with family present from 4-7 pm. All other services will be private.
