Shirley Jean (Johnson) Anderson, 88, of Sioux Falls, went to her heavenly home Thursday, April 4, 2014, at Prince of Peace Nursing Home, Sioux Falls. A service celebrating Shirleys life will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday, April 10, at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 901 S. Minnesota Ave. in Sioux Falls, with a luncheon following. A private interment will take place in Hetland, South Dakota. Shirley was born June 16, 1925, on a farm near Hetland, the fourth child of Frank and Anna Johnson. She attended country school and graduated from Hetland High School in 1943. She attended South Dakota State College, where she was College May Day Queen in her senior year. She graduated in 1947. She worked for several years for the South Dakota Department of Social Services. Shirley married Chester R. Anderson June 14, 1958, in Mobridge, South Dakota. They made their home in Sioux Falls. Shirleys greatest joys were family and friends. She was known for her hospitality, stimulating conversation, and contagious laugh. She loved history, reading, and creative writing. She will be lovingly remembered by children Tom (Judy) Anderson, Paonia, Colo.; Jim Anderson, Sioux Falls; Becky (Jim) Phen, Sioux Falls; Jeff (Laurie) Anderson, Edina, Minn.; and Susan (Ed) Horstmann, Greenwich, Conn.; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Shirley was preceded in death by three brothers, her husband, and daughter Roberta Burns. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Shirleys name to the Hetland Historical Society, 106 Main Ave. Hetland, SD 57244, or a charity of your choice .
