John ?Jack? Alvey was born on April 2, 1920 at Hartford, South Dakota, the son of William L. Alvey and Mary (Fernan) Alvey. He graduated from high school and attended college. Jack served in the US Army Air Corps from October of 1942 ? February of 1946. Jack returned to live and work in Sioux Falls. Jack worked as a pipefitter for a few years and then was a salesman in the barber and beauty supply business for a number of years. Jack married Mary Luing on March 16, 1957 at Luverne, Minnesota. Jack worked at John Morrell Company for 24 years. Mary passed away on November 26, 1993. Jack was 89 years old when he passed away on September 7, 2009 at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. Jack enjoyed woodworking in his free time. He looked forward to having coffee with his friends at the VFW Post and at Sunshine Foods. Grateful for having shared in his life are his children and their spouses, Jack and Linda Alvey of Casa Grande, AZ, Jeff and Sherri Alvey of Sioux Falls, Jennifer and John Strawn of Sioux Falls; 9 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren; a sister, Kathryn Kapaun, Marshalltown, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and five siblings, Mary, Bill, Bob, Pat and Jimmy.
