Alvin was born on April 27, 1932 at Waubay, South Dakota, the son of Frank and Anna (Block) Helwig. He attended school at Waubay and as a young man began working for the REA installing poles and transmission lines.
Alvin entered the US Navy in 1950. He married Mardell Lardy in Webster, South Dakota on May 7, 1952. When Alvin was discharged in 1954 and the couple settled at Renner and had three children, Terese, Garry and Janelle. Alvin worked for Sioux Steel for a short time and then worked at John Morrell. Alvin lost his wife and children too an automobile accident in 1964.
Alvin became an owner of the Silver Moon in the mid 1960’s. He then owned and operated the Sportsmans Bar and Smoe’s before retiring in 1996.
He enjoyed riding motorcycles for many years and attended several ralleys in Sturgis with his long-time companion, Cheri Callies. Alvin spent many winter seasons in Texas and loved spending time with his dog, Brownie.
Alvin is survived by his sister, Joan Turgeon of Omaha, NE; his partner, Cheri; and many extended family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife and children; and five siblings, Lorraine, Verna, Annette, Frank and Ernest.
