Our dear Bernice Mae Harms passed away on December 11, 2022 at the age of 79. Bernice was born on June 17, 1943 on a farm 5 miles east of Tunerville or 15 minutes northeast of Clear Lake, SD to Jessie Marie (Hanson) and Clarence Eugene Adolph. She attended country grade school/District 31 and graduated in 1957. She went to high school in Revillo, SD and graduated in 1961. She worked at Lee’s Cafe in Watertown for about a month and then came with her cousin, Alice, to Sioux Falls. In Sioux Falls, Bernice worked at Dakota News, Elks Club, then to Dow-Rummel for 36 years.
Bernice met the love of her life, Art, at the Arkota Ballroom. They loved the Old Time Music Polka’s Bands on Wednesday night. They were married on March 8, 1963 and were married for 54 years.
Bernice loved to garden, grow flowers and take care of her home for 58 years. Her wild petunias overtook everything, including sidewalks, gardens and in front of her garage. She carefully backed out of her garage to avoid running over them. Family was important to her. Saturday nights, her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren gathered at her home for cards, dinner, and sharing laughs. Bernice was a good listener, and never let kids or grandkids leave without a hug. As a Grandma, she loved attending grandkid functions, as much as possible.
Bernice had faith in the promises of the Bible and loved her God, Jehovah. She was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on May 3, 1979. She was a member of the Aspen Heights congregation and loved her friends there. She enjoyed sharing her Bible hope with others by letter writing and always welcomed all to her home.
She is survived by her children, Norma Jean (Randy) Eie, Brenda Mae (Brad) Norby, Susan Marie Powell, David Arthur (Allissa) Harms, Dennis Arthur (Amy) Harms, Teresa Jo (James) Fitzler. 14 grandchildren: Danielle (Matt) McCarthy, Nicklos (Shelby) Norby, Desiree (Jake) Dressen, Jasmyn Eie, Bronson Eie, Mikaela (Tim) Ronan, Katelyn Fitzler, Izaac Fitzler, Hunter Harms, Joslyn Harms, Kara Harms, Allyson Harms, Megan (David) Napolitano, Brooke Powell; 10 great grand children: Vance, Nash, Hayes, Harper, Dahlia, Bruno, Rosemary, Violet, Maverick, Silas.
She was proceeded in death by her husband, Art Harms; a son, Calvin; son-in-law, Ron Powell, Jr; 3 brothers, Eugene, James, Melvin; 2 sisters, Janette and Delores.
