Bernadine Faye Sheppard, affectionately known as Bernie, peacefully departed from this world on April 7th, 2024, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, after bravely facing a prolonged battle with her failing health. Born on April 24th, 1961, to Virginia Lee Heuer (Spencer) and Virgil Lee Heuer, Bernie cherished her roots in Pierre and Fort Pierre, finding solace in the riverside and the treasures of everyday life.
Bernie's adventurous spirit was evident in her love for long walks by the river, often enjoying refreshing swims. Her keen eye for the beauty in the mundane led her to jot down notes on various subjects, from herbal remedies to personal reflections and poetry. She lived by the mantra, "one man's junk is another man's treasure," finding value in life's simplest pleasures.
Bernie's legacy lives on through her cherished children: Athaniel Johnston, Jaysun, Bobby, Angelina, Elizabeth Shisler, Rachel Rieger, and Amanda Tucker, as well as her numerous adoring grandchildren and a vast network of family and friends. She is reunited in eternal peace with her daughter Christina Tucker, her parents Virgil and Virginia Heuer, and other loved ones who preceded her in death.
In addition to her immediate family, Bernie is survived by her siblings: Sindy/Steven Graham, Roseville, MN; Vicky/Bruce Pittman, Independence, MO; Virgil Heuer, Yankton, SD; Timothy Heuer, Midland, SD; and Lonnie/Cecilia Heuer, Vicenza, Italy, along with a host of relatives and friends who will continue to cherish her memory.
A Celebration of Life ceremony honoring Bernie's remarkable journey will take place on April 20th, 2024, serving as a testament to the love and light she brought into the lives of all who knew her. May her spirit continue to guide and inspire us all.
