Evonne Johnson

May 11, 1928 — February 21, 2025

Sioux Falls

Evonne died on Feb. 21, 2025 At Ava's House, Sioux Falls.

Evonne was born on May 11, 1928 at  Alpena, SD, the daughter of Walter and Lena (Dalaski) Hotchkiss. She grew up near Alpena and graduated from Alpena High School.  She then attended beauty school in Watertown. While she was attending school, Evonne was working as a waitress at a cafe in Watertown. That is where she met Don and they were married a few months later on September 20, 1947.

They lived in several communities in southwest Minnesota and southeast South Dakota before settling near Canton. After the children where old enough to take care of themselves, Evonne worked at Otis Radio and later at K-Products in Canton. Later, she worked in the housekeeping department at Sioux Valley Hospital for many years.

Evonne bowled in a couple league with Don for a number of years and continued in singles league after Don passed away up into her early 90's. She enjoyed crochet, embroidery, and working in her yard. Evonne kept her mind active as well, playing Bingo, working on word search and crossword puzzles. She enjoyed reading too and was in the book club at StoneyBrook Suites.

Evonne is survived by her children, Carol (Wally) Fee of Harrisburg, Janet (Larry) Gannon of Dell Rapids, Greg Johnson of Sioux Falls, Gary (Karalee) Johnson of Scotland, Roxanne Putnam of Sioux Falls and Kevin Johnson of Alcester; 25 grandchildren, 51 great grandchildren and 15 great-great grandchildren; two siblings, Gilbert Hotchkiss of Phoenix, AZ and Joyce Mees of Wessington Springs; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons, Stan and Leroy; five grandchildren, Jimmy, Gary Steven, Tony, Aaron and Vincent.
