Judith Higgins

Judith Kathryn Higgins, age 69, passed away December 21, 2024 in her residence in Sioux Falls, SD.

Judith was born March 5, 1955, the 7th child to long time Miller, SD residents Vincent Edward Higgins and Faith Darlene McRoden Higgins.

Judith graduated Miller High School in 1973; later receiving a Degree in Early Childhood Education from Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD and subsequently a Master's in Early Childhood Education from the University of Minnesota, 1983 - 1986. Judith’s educational career took her to several Native American tribal communities around South Dakota; often working through Head Start. After many years Judith left education moving back to Miller; later returning briefly to education before retiring to Sioux Falls.

Judith enjoyed crafts and sewing including making decorative quilts for family members.

Judith was a caring woman who volunteered with multiple Veteran organizations including the VA, Veterans Community Project, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 38, where she served as President for several years while living in Miller and with Mission 22, a program for soldiers suffering from PTSD and prevention of veteran suicide. Upon retirement to Sioux Falls she joined American Legion Auxiliary Unit 15.

Using her craft skills Judith crocheted lap throws for veterans and caps for active service personnel to use under helmets.

Judith was preceded in death by both parents, one nephew, Chad Abbott and two in-laws, Mike Armstrong and Max Porath. Judith is survived by her 16 siblings: Sharon (Larry) Christenson, James, Edwin, Patrica, Mary Porath, Darlene Nixon, Nancy Schumacher, Cathleen, John, Teresa (Randy) Fanning, Daniel, Timothy, Thomas, Carol, Dianne Armstrong and William. As well several nieces & nephews and great-nieces & great-nephews.

Judith will be missed deeply by her family and friends who knew her.

Judith will be cremated with memorial services to be set for a later date.
