Shelley passed away on April 10, 2024 at Ava's House in Sioux Falls, following a year-long battle with cancer. Shelley was born on January 22, 1954 in Tyler, Minnesota, the daughter of James and Kathleen (Sullivan) Rasmussen. The family moved to Toronto, South Dakota when Shelley was very young and she grew up at Toronto and graduated from Deubrook High School in 1972.
Shelley graduated from the Sioux Falls School of Practical Nursing in 1974. While going to school, she worked as a Nurse Aide at the Whetstone Valley Nursing Home in Milbank, SD. She worked as a LPN in the Orthopedics Department at Sioux Valley Hospital from 1974-1977 and then at the VA Medical Center for a year and before she returned to Sioux Valley Hospital. Shelley worked in the Coronary Intensive Care Unit from 1983-1989. She also returned to school and earned and Associate Nursing Degree in 1989 through USD. She continued working in the coronary unit but also was placed in the Surgical and Critical Care Unit through 2008. Again, while working, Shelley furthered her education and took classes in Accounting and earned a Bachelor Degree in 2006 and completed a Masters Degree in Business Administration in 2007. In 2008, she began working in the accounting department at the Argus Leader was was with them until 2018. Shelley worked in the insurance department at Avera until her health forced her to retire in the fall of 2023.
In her free time, Shelley enjoyed shopping for collectible items including, crystal, glass and dishes. She also collected Christmas decorations, hand made quilts, and items with acorns and oak leaves. She was an avid gardener, always having tomatoes and cucumbers at the least, and grew many varieties of flowers.
Shelley is survived by her siblings, Jamie (Henry) Konshak of Madison, SD , Allen (Janice) Rasmussen of Madison, SD and Belinda (Leroy) Kruse of Volga, SD; a nephew and six nieces, Shannon, Karmen, Erin, James, Jessica, Carrie and Sandra. She is preceded in death by her parents.
